It was her third year of study at Charles Sturt University and an introduction to the quintessential country practice in Corowa Veterinary Clinic.
The business specialised in large animal work, on-call to farmers and horse owners throughout the southern Riverina.
It had also evolved to cater for the growth in small animal work.
The mix appealed to Dr Williams from the outset.
Dr Bennett fittingly sold the business to Dr Williams and her Riverina-raised husband Michael Hamilton this year after more than 42 years of nurturing that patch.
Having taken over the practice this month, Dr Williams said she was delighted to come back to her early training ground.
"Corowa is one of the few truly mixed practices left," she said.
"There is a big percentage of large animal work; I like the herd and livestock health side of things.
"I'm particularly interested in medicine and the tricky diagnostic cases."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Born and bred in East Gippsland, Dr Williams said there was a shortage of country veterinarians.
She said the strong sheep market had buoyed demand for services in that sector.
"We have a very big market to fill," Dr Williams said.
"We'll continue our branch at Howlong and we'd like to extend our services out to Oaklands and Rand.
"We'll have other vets joining me; we'll have experienced cattle vets and others qualified with equine care.
"We hope to cover all of the bases."
Dr Bennett welcomed the changeover at his long-running clinic.
"To have someone I believe will carry on the practice along similar lines to me is very satisfying," he said.
"To have someone who is like-minded in this day and age is wonderful.
"Hannah's approach to the business will be a little different and hopefully even better than mine!"
