Wodonga's Bira Flix will cease trading on June 30 with soon-to-be former employee Andrew Gillam saying it would be a huge loss for the community.
With the advent of internet streaming, DVD rental stores across the world have struggled to keep pace.
"I feel that the rise in streaming services like Netflix and Stan, along with online piracy, has really made an impact in the last few years on this business," Mr Gillam said.
"The constant lockdowns with COVID-19 hasn't helped and I think this lockdown was the last nail in the coffin."
Bira Flix started operating in 2012, taking up the vacant spot left behind by Video Ezy at the Birallee Village Shopping Centre.
Mr Gillam, who is a self-confessed DVD fanatic with a family collection of over 3000, feels sad for future generations who will miss the experience of visiting a video store.
"For me I loved coming to the movie store as a kid," he said.
"You got to physically see the movies and have a connection with the other customers and employees and that's something you're never going to get scrolling through Netflix.
"As someone who has grown up in a big family where we basically based our lives on DVDs, we were down every week renting out movies as kids.
"It's a sad day for everyone and especially the next generation that is going to miss out on coming to rent DVDs."
Mr Gillam said the thing he'll miss most is the customers and the face-to-face interaction he had with fellow movie goers.
"The customers were the best thing," he said.
"I loved seeing the regulars and having that one-on-one interaction with them.
"That's something that I'm truly going to miss."
The last few years have been tumultuous for the independent video store with a car running through the front window in 2017 and a break in November last year.
Only one DVD/video rental store remains in Wodonga while Albury's final store in Urana Road closed in 2018.
At the end of 2018, there were only 750 DVD/video rental stores remaining nationally.
