According to Ilana Cherny, a forecaster with the Bureau of Meteorology, the North East city received 19mm of rain in just a 15-minute span.

"According to our climatology there's just a five to 10 per cent chance of that rainfall rate occurring in any one year," she said.

Overall Wangaratta received 29mm of rainfall.

Wodonga received nearly an inch, with 21mm of rain.

Other parts of the North East also received a shower of hail, with residents in Bright reporting a solid blanketing of hail stones, but no major damage.

Albury got just 2mm of rain, according to the Bureau, and NSW SES received no call outs.

Ms Cherny said the outlook for the Border and North East region didn't promise much more rain, but cold, foggy mornings may be back next week.

"Today there will just be a few showers about, probably just a few millimetres," she said.

"In the alpine areas we've seen that as that cold air comes through the snow level drops, so there is some possibility of some more snow showers in the next few days.

"Sunday, Monday, Tuesday we'll be under the influence of a high-pressure system where we get more of that pattern that we saw quite a bit of in Autumn where we had those cool mornings with a chance of frost and fog but clearer afternoons."

Beechworth received roughly 7mm over the past 24 hours, with Benalla receiving around 9mm.

Milawa had well over an inch of rain, recording 29.2mm of rain.

Chiltern received 5.8mm of rain.

Barnawatha recorded 2.2mm of rainfall.
