Magic Merv's most recent win was a Wagga in July last year.
Ridden by Alana Kelly, Magic Merv ($8) relished the heavy conditions to take out the $22,000 Benchmark 58 Hcp, (1400m).
Hanley bred Magic Merv who is out of his handy mare Dry Shagny and is raced by a large syndicate of family and friends.
Hanley said he was confident Magic Merv could run a bold race on the heavy (9).
"I'm fairly pumped about the win," Hanley said.
"This horse just loves the going and I was fairly confident.
"I have had my fair share of troubles getting the horse fit of late but he has finally come good.
"My biggest query was whether he could run a strong 1400m.
"I raced his mother which makes the win that bit more special."
