Greenhill played his 50th game in the shock win over premiers Lavington a fortnight ago.
"It was definitely a bit of a shock (when I took over), McKye Turner has been our captain for a number of years and when he went down with his knee, it was his idea to step down and have someone who was playing as captain, I just got voted in by the players and coaches, so it was a pretty massive privilege," he explained.
"I got a few messages from older players that are no longer at Wodonga, Jack Russell said, 'be yourself, don't change'."
Greenhill is one of the league's youngest captains of recent years, gaining the top job at just 22.
He celebrated his 23rd birthday last month.
The defender-cum-midfielder is the son of former outstanding Wodonga player David.
"I keep forgetting to ask dad if he ever captained the club, but he said a similar thing to some of the others, don't take it too seriously and think about it too much," he offered.

Greenhill was named the club's best player in the 18-point win over Lavington and backed it up with a second best display in last week's win over Corowa-Rutherglen.
He started the season in defence, but has recently moved to the midfield.
"It's been awesome, I'm really loving it at the moment," he praised.
Wodonga faces a massive task away to Wangaratta Rovers on Saturday.
The Hawks suffered a 37-point loss to Albury and this is a game the club simply can't afford to lose if it wants to keep a one-game break on Myrtleford in third.
"They're a strong side and it's a big chance to see where we're at," Greenhill said.
"We think our best can match the best, we'll definitely have a red-hot crack."
The match suddenly looks like being the closest of the round as the league enters the second half of the season.
Wodonga's Ethan Redcliffe has become a dangerous crumbing forward, Cody Szust has shown his ability to be opportunistic around goals, while Josh Mathey has been consistent.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Rovers have named former Gold Coast Suns-listed player Todd Grayson as an emergency, but they have done that previously with Ryan Hebron and he played, so it won't surprise to see the defender debut against the youthful Bulldogs.
