The Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said having patrols of outside officers and local police based out of six border hubs, including Wodonga and Yarrawonga, ensured better use of labour and time in finding offenders.

"We don't rule out at any stage going to a fixed model but at this stage this is the most effective model we believe we should be introducing," Mr Patton said in Melbourne on Monday.

"What it means is that anywhere, anytime we can pop up, we can put up a booze bus interception site, we can put up random interception sites and checkpoints and it gives us greater visibility over those who might seek to get around the sites, greater visibility on those back roads as well as the main arterials."

The patrols are set to be supplemented with police air patrols and defence force assistance and Mr Patton said fines of $4957 would be issued to misbehaving travellers.
