As Greater Sydney's lockdown and regional restrictions were extended to at least July 30, Ms Symes said she would like to see stronger restrictions put on regional NSW.

"When we had the border restrictions and the border bubble last year, we also had the ring of steel around Melbourne, which was that added protection for Victorian country residents," she said.

"My concern is that because we have stage three restrictions, plus masks, but not stage four restrictions in Sydney, we are not having the same level of protection for country NSW, which indeed jeopardises border communities and indeed, country Victoria.

"So I would like to see heavier restrictions on movement from Sydney."

Ms Symes could not rule out a harder border being enforced by Victoria Police and said she was getting an update on their operations while in Wodonga.

"They have been doing a fantastic job and we have learnt a lot," she said.

"The hard lockdown checkpoints do inconvenience a lot of people and this roving, targeted model is proving effective at this point in time, dealing with the risks that we are facing.

"Beneficially for a lot of border communities, is that Melbourne tends to be more of where they would head to, as opposed to Sydney.

"So in that sense, what we've got at the moment is proportionate to the risk, but I cannot give guarantees that we won't have to enhance our restrictions as we respond to any of the threats we're facing from those cases that are in Sydney."

Ms Symes confirmed NSW cross-border community residents in red zones such as Albury could go to Melbourne.

"If you are part of the border bubble, you have free range of movement into Victoria - what we would certainly like to remind those in the border bubble of, is this is predominantly around ensuring that your way of life, your work or education is not impacted," she said.

"If you leave the border bubble into further parts of regional NSW ... you are not permitted to come into Victoria without serving a 14 day quarantine period."

Ms Symes said border controls were unfortunately "all too familiar" for communities.

"But indeed, particularly as a local member for this region, I'm certainly a big advocate of the border bubble - we don't want to apply restrictions to everyday life that impacts people just going about their business, but we do have to take protective measures for the benefit of the Victorian community," she said.
