The popular event was originally scheduled to be held on the Queen's Birthday long weekend (June 12 and 13) and was rescheduled for July 24 and 25, before it was abandoned altogether on Thursday.

Winemakers of Rutherglen executive officer Annalee Nolan said the uncertainty of the unfolding situation, which has seen the lockdown on Greater Sydney extended by two weeks and Victoria sent into a five-day snap lockdown as of midnight, has made it too hard to push on with the event.

"The health and safety of our staff, patrons and wider Rutherglen community is our primary concern and core responsibility," the statement said.

"All current ticket holders will be entitled to a full refund which will be processed within 14 days.

"There is no need for ticket holders to take any further action.

"Whilst we are extremely disappointed to not be hosting this much-loved event, we remain sincerely appreciative to our loyal patrons and look forward to being reunited with you all in 2022."

Plans were in full swing for the event to go ahead as recently as Tuesday.
