Officers were alerted to the incident at Beechworth Self Storage Sheds on Crawford Street on Friday morning last week.
The property had been targeted between 7.30pm on Thursday and 8.30am the following morning.
The offender or offenders cut a cyclone fence at the back of the property to gain access.
They then cut locks to the 52 storage units and took property, including camping equipment and chainsaws.
Police believe multiple people must have been involved and that a vehicle was likely used.
"They have gone through each storage shed and taken an unknown quantity of property that belongs to the people who use the storage sheds," Senior Sergeant Chris Parr said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"If anyone who lives in that area saw anything untoward, if they could let Crime Stoppers know we would really appreciate it."
Senior Sergeant Parr said the offenders would have used torches.
"A lot of the sheds had very high quality locks and it would have taken some effort to get in," he said.
"So they would have been there for a considerable amount of time, cutting each lock and looking in each shed."
Inspector Paul Hargreaves asked nearby residents with security cameras to check their footage.
"Anyone who saw something unusual, we'd been keen to hear from them," he said.
"It doesn't matter how small it is, every piece of the puzzle can make a difference."
