In addition to campus tours, the online event included presentations from lecturers, question and answer sessions with academics, information on career paths and one on one study option consultations.
La Trobe event staff team member Ryan O'Connell said hosting the event online meant the sessions could be streamed on demand for the rest of August.
"So any prospective students who weren't able to make it today - or those who want to return to the sessions to really digest what's on offer - can log back in whenever it suits them and view all of today's content at their leisure," he said.
"While it's always disappointing to miss out on the chance to host visitors to our campuses, we're looking forward to connecting with new students on site later this year."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Head of Campus Dr Guin Threlkeld said the University understood the importance of individualised, tailored advice for young people to help them in their careers.
"The decision about where to study is an important one, and I believe it's vital that we provide prospective students a chance to experience the campuses for themselves before making that choice," he said.
Mr O'Connell said there had been national and international visitors at the open day.
"It's been great see attendees from all over Victoria reflect our commitment to higher education in regional and rural areas,' he said.
"We've also had many visitors from around the world, particularly Europe and South Asia, which is a great upside to the online delivery."
In September the University will run tours on campus and if restrictions allow later in the year, there are plans to run an on campus open day.
