Captain Joe Root was on 12 at the break, having hit Mohammed Siraj for three consecutive boundaries after electing to bat on Wednesday.

After Root won the toss and elected to bat, Jasprit Bumrah gave India a perfect start dismissing Burns lbw for duck in the very first over.
After taking the first four balls away from the opener, Bumrah swung the fifth in to trap the batsman, who reviewed the decision but could not prolong his stay.
Crawley drove and pulled with confidence and was looking good before falling to Siraj in an eventful over after making 27.
Kohli had burnt a review in that Siraj over and was naturally reluctant to go for a second but wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was adamant.
Kohli eventually relented and replays confirmed Crawley had nicked Siraj to perish caught behind.
England left out spinner Jack Leach, opting for a seam-only attack, bringing back all-rounder Sam Curran and batsman Jonny Bairstow.
For India, KL Rahul will be Rohit Sharma's opening partner after Shubman Gill returned home with a shin injury and Mayank Agarwal was ruled out of the test having suffered a blow to his helmet in training.
India dropped off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja being their lone spin option.
