The society has to vacate its home of the last 20 years in South Street after the building in which it was a tenant was sold earlier this year.
The building's previous owner Bill Miller generously charged a discounted rental fee which was paid for by Wodonga Council.
The council is prepared to enter into a fresh memorandum of understanding with an ongoing annual contribution of $23,500 for a further three years in order to move to Bonegilla next month.
A newly-elected committee headed by Marie Elliott has been installed, but front of mind post the relocation has to be identifying and securing a permanent home in central Wodonga again.
As generous as the offer from council is to go to Bonegilla, the travel factor will become a deterrent to people visiting at some point.
IN OTHER NEWS
Wodonga Council has acknowledged the society's contribution by having a display in the freshly minted Hyphen library-gallery.
But more effort needs to be made to find a lasting niche.
Rotating displays of Wodonga's history and appropriately promoted would surely drive more visitors into Hyphen, which ultimately is the goal of its creation.
An operating model exists close by in Albury with its library-museum.
Ease of access rather than barriers such as travel must become a priority consideration.
Other options have been considered in the past including setting up in the railway goods shed in Junction Place before its redevelopment into a hospitality outlet.
Current commercial real estate prices are another stumbling block and the Victorian Government will need to be a funding contributor at some point.
But first and foremost is the relevant stakeholders' commitment levels to making the city's history a long term drawcard for visitors and locals alike.
