Unframed, a collection of images by John Osmond, can be seen at GIGS Art Gallery, Gateway Village, Wodonga, until August 29.
With the opening date delayed by the latest Victorian lockdown and then new rules restricting Albury visitors' access, Osmond admits the project has been difficult to pull together.
But even so, he's "actually pretty pleased with it".
"A lot of it's out of my normal comfort zone," he said.
More accustomed to landscape photography, Osmond in this exhibition deliberately expands his range.
"From highly staged to spontaneity, finely crafted to ad hoc on the spur of the moment, handheld," he explained.
The photos, the culmination of six months' work, capture scenes from Dubbo, Newcastle, Kangaroo Valley and Hay, often shooting with a Nikon film camera.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Osmond said technique was important in making these photographs.
"Using a Nikon DSLR and two Nikon film cameras was the start of the technical process," he said.
"Digital images were edited using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop; the film was developed using a home-made Caffenol C (coffee) solution prior to being scanned and some digital editing applied.
"All images are true to my original vision."
His composites and selfies explore the theme of isolation.
"How people can be surrounded by people but still be lonely or isolated," the artist said.
The title Unframed refers literally to the lack of frames.
"But also framed means that it's also being constrained," he said.
"In this case, this exhibition was me exploring, getting out of my comfort zone.
"Breaking the mould, doing something completely different."
Osmond hopes to hold a meet the artist event ("fingers crossed") on Saturday.
GIGS Art Gallery is generally open Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 4pm.
