Wangaratta's Michael Newton and Albury's Jacob Conlan have both finished on 44 goals, with the league cancelling the final round of the home and away fixture due to regional NSW's current lockdown.
It was believed that Newton had finished in the lead, before a glitch was detected in the goalkicking tally.
Records from the season opener indicated Conlan had kicked one goal in the third quarter of the clash with Yarrawonga, but it has since been corrected to show that he also scored another in the second term.
The league revisited match day footage, notes and recordings from the game on March 27 to find Conlan had in fact booted two that day.
The error is said to have occurred after the timekeepers awarded Conlan's goal to teammate Jeff Garlett by mistake, with Garlett claiming 26 goals from games played.
It's not the first time Conlan has led the way in goalkicking, having taken out the Riverina Football League's tally with Griffith Swans in 2019.
