Chairperson Peter Whitmarsh announced the cancellation "with much disappointment", saying it aligned with Cancer Council's direction to call off all physical events this spring.

"This decision is totally understandable and supported by our local committee given the situation across both our Border communities, with the ever-changing and ongoing situation with the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.

"A number of relay teams have been very active with their fundraising this year and all teams are still encouraged to support the cause within the rules of social distancing and lockdown requirements."

The committee decided against repeating last year's online relay, instead considering other ways to involve the community in 2022.

"Naturally what we can do will be limited by the COVID situation at that time, but we live in hope, as we have for 20 years," Mr Whitmarsh said.

"It will not be a replacement relay event, but an opportunity to bring together our relay community in a more social environment to celebrate, remember and fight back."

The major raffle will be extended to the end of the year. Tickets are available at raffletix.com.au/borderrfl2021 and can be linked to a specific relay team's fundraising total.

Mr Whitmarsh thanked the relay community, sponsors and supporters.
