But it was a nervous wait on the last Saturday in September for the devoted Dees' fan, as he held his breath in anticipation.
"I reckon I was up at about 5am and I didn't know what to do," he said.
"Three cups of coffee later and I was out mowing the lawns.
"I think I mowed the front lawns three times just for something to do."
Mr Naughton watched the game with his curtains down and TV on full volume alongside mate Dean Carroll as the Demons made history at Perth's Optus Stadium.
Like any die-hard Melbourne supporter will tell you, it was a long time in the making.
"Talk about the monkey off the back now," Mr Naughton said.
"When you think about Jim Stynes and Neale Daniher and what they've been through, the club just had to win it.
"It was a long time in the making and they played well not only yesterday, but all year.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"I have a lot of mates who are Bulldogs fans and there was a bit of banter."
The CAW board member comes from a family of Melbourne supporters, except for his mum who barracks for the Saints.
His son Sam is a Tigers supporter, but that may now change following the weekend.
"This year he got the red and blue on, so I might have won him back," Mr Naughton said.
He was also thrilled for local Demon recruits Charlie Spargo, James Jordan and Dan Turner.
It wasn't all smooth sailing though as the Bulldogs showed their capabilities in the second term.
"They were asked the big question in that second quarter, are they good enough? And the answer was yeah, we are," Mr Naughton said.
While he expects his lawn to stay red and blue, he had a back-up plan just in case things didn't go his way.
"I rang Peards and said I need half a trailer load of sand because if the Bulldogs win I'll be pouring it over the top," he laughed.
"I'm just glad for the next 12 months we're the premiership side."
