The case, believed to be from Beechworth, has been managed through the Albury Wodonga Health public health unit after a positive result was received on Saturday night and announced on Sunday.

Initial results were inclusive, but AWH received clarification on Monday night that the resident had been confirmed as a positive COVID case.

However, Albury Wodonga Health public health director Lucie Shanahan revealed extra work needed to be done by contact tracers to determine how the virus was acquired.

"This person is currently in hospital in Melbourne and is certainly showing significant signs of a respiratory illness," she said.

"The other thing is we had some variable test results, so whilst initial testing showed a positive result, subsequent testing had shown a negative result.

"The contact tracing team here are working to identify any exposure sites."

Ms Shanahan was pleased with the response from Wodonga residents get tested across the weekend and said Wodonga Racecourse would remain open for testing until the end of the week.

"In every regional town when an outbreak occurs and there's a number of exposure sites, there's an initial surge from the community," she said.

"I must say the response from Albury Wodonga Health staff on Saturday to be able to open an extra clinic on such short notice was fantastic.

"Each of the towns that sit around Albury-Wodonga do have really great testing capacity, generally through the local hospital or GP services."

Three new North East businesses were listed as COVID exposure sites yesterday.

Chemist King and Coles in Myrtleford, as well as Beechworth's Shell Service Station have been declared tier-two sites after a positive COVID case attended all three venues.

The Victorian health department said some people who attended the Myrtleford sites would be classed as tier-one contacts and must isolate for 14 days regardless of their test result.

Those deemed tier-two contacts must get tested and isolate until they receive a negative test result.

Rubens of Beechworth Hairdressing identified itself as an exposure site after a client who visited last Wednesday tested positive.
