After winning at Corowa when resuming from a spell early last month Albert The Cat produced a lucklustre performance when finishing near the tail of the field at his most recent start on Benalla Cup day.
However, the four-year-old gelding made amends by taking out the $24,000 Class One Hcp, (1400m) with jockey Jordan Mallyon aboard.
Albert The Cat ($10) was near the tail of the field turning for home but swamped his rivals late with a powerful finishing burst.
Trainer Geoff Duryea was pleasantly surprised to see Albert The Cat produce such a stunning finish.
"I wasn't at Benalla because of COVID so I'm not too sure why he ran so poorly there but he never looked comfortable in the run," Duryea said.
"But I thought the step-up to 1400m from 1200m would suit him.
"The soft going is always a query until they race on it but the horse did a good job and was able to do what we hoped he would."

The lightly raced gelding has now won two of six career starts.
Duryea said he would wait before deciding on Albert The Cat's next assignment.
Albury trainers Ron Stubbs and Mitch Beer both claimed the training honours with winning doubles.
Stubbs combined with Mathew Cahill to win with Spritely Miss ($5.50) and Boss Lady Rock ($2.10-fav).
While Simon Miller was aboard the Beer-trained duo of Baria and Branders Rule.
