The Vine Hotel won best regional live music venue at the Music Victoria 2021 Industry Awards by managing to host 41 gigs despite capacity restrictions and other COVID-safe measures.
Operator Jimmy Ladgrove said he was shocked to win the award on the hotel's first ever nomination, up against larger venues in more touristy areas.
"It was such a great achievement for us, because live music and hospitality, those industries were the worst hit," he said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"To coordinate live music events through the pandemic was a rollercoaster of emotions.
"It was definitely worth it, but at times it was extremely deflating to have shows pulled literally the night before."
Mr Ladgrove said he was passionate about supporting the music industry, which he did by hosting gigs for small audiences and giving all revenue from ticket sales back to the bands.
"Even with the patrons caps we made it work, but with the musicians if they don't have a venue they don't have a gig," he said.
"My heart broke for them.
"The pandemic has certainly made people realise the value of live music...it's all well and good to put on a musician live and free in the afternoon, but I think that sort of devalues them."
Apart from hosting gigs, the pub was recognised for its LGBTQI inclusion, supporting a wide variety of musical genres and its environmentally friendly initiatives.
Mr Ladgrove said the restrictions easing from 11.59pm Thursday night, allowing up to 30 people indoors in regional Victorian entertainment venues, would make a huge difference to business.
"I've got nine of my staff that are stood down that are just waiting to come back to work," he said.
"This last four months have been hardest, because you can't do much so I don't need the staff, so it means all my staff can come back."
"I have a whole summer line up of events coming up.
"December, January, February, I think for a lot of people is going to be the busiest period in in the history of hospitality...so just [to be allowed]100 outside is great."
