Forms and Echoes, an exhibition showcasing the work of Nuno Rodrigues de Sousa, can be seen at the Wangaratta Art Gallery until December 5.
Mr de Sousa said he first started the project in Portugal, but continued working on it, when he came to Australia in 2014.
"My work's rather abstract and geometrical," he said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"I usually say my work has two layers of meaning; so there is the aesthetical perspective, the shapes, the colours, the depths can be seen independently.
"And the other layer of meaning is it's a bit more conceptual, because every work that I have ... is connected with a reference."
Mr de Sousa said some people might not understand the references, which could be about other painters like Josef Aalbers, or about architecture, paintings, places, or communities, real or fictional or even scientific theories.
"Sometimes it can be cryptic, but others are not so cryptic," he said.
