The former Wodonga TAFE boss' exit was announced on Thursday morning in a media release from the council.

In the statement, Mr Dixon says he has accepted another job which gives him the chance to test his skills in a new fashion.

"I have been very fortunate in being offered a CEO role with an international organisation which presents a great opportunity for me, at my stage in life, to do something quite unique and different," Mr Dixon said in the media release.

The former soldier is leaving council before the end of a four-year term which he accepted upon taking the top municipal job in April 2019.

Mr Dixon's period in the role has been dominated by COVID in the past two years with the city having to cope with border closures and Victorian government restrictions.

"I leave behind a very strong, capable organisation and leadership team with a concise and focused strategic council plan in place - our city is poised for significant new growth, post-COVID," he said.

Wodonga Mayor Kev Poulton accepted Mr Dixon's resignation this week, which has also seen him re-elected for a second term as mayor after first being elevated to council last year.

In the media release, Cr Poulton praises Mr Dixon for "strong and calm leadership".

"We want to thank Mark for his service and, on behalf of staff and our community, wish him well for what is ahead," Cr Poulton said.

"I know this was a tough decision to make because Mark has enjoyed and embraced the diversity of local government but we understand we can't compete with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
