The Corryong Show Committee is hosting a 'Cracker Family Night' on Saturday from 4pm into the evening to give the community something fun to look forward to and a reason to get together unrelated to an emergency.
Committee member Emma Klippel said the Upper Murray residents were still seeing the impacts of the destruction 2019/2020 summer bushfires and working through the repercussions of COVID-19.
"Normally each year in October we host the annual Corryong Show," she said.
"But with the lack of information available in the lead up for event, the committee felt that we couldn't;' run the show to its normal capacity, but we still felt like it was important to do something.
"What we were feeling from the community was we just need something to happen, we just need an outlet, we just need something to go to.
"So we came up with the Cracker Family Night."
IN OTHER NEWS:
The event was supported through funding from various Upper Murray bushfire community recovery committees and will provide a range of activities and entertainment for all ages, including live local music, market stalls, inflatable rides, a mechanical bull, a photo booth, face painting, an animal nursery and showbags.
Members from Victoria Police, the CFA and the Department of Water, Environment, Land and Planning will attend the event to talk to interested residents.
Towong Shire will also cover the costs of a firework display for the evening.
Ms Klippel said the event had created a buzz around town.
"Especially with the fireworks," she said.
"I remember as a kid there was always fireworks in Khancoban at Easter time, but it's been a long time since that happened, so everyone's really looking forward to the firework display."
Ms Klippel said the whole community needed the chance to come together as one again, after it was Victorian and NSW sides of the Upper Murray were divided by state government restrictions during the pandemic.
"But also we haven't really had the chance to come together after the bushfires," she said.
'So it will be a nice relaxed night for people just to come together and mingle as one.
"Certainly since COVID it would be the first big community event to run."
People aged 16 years and above must be double vaccinated to attend the night.
People can buy tickets online through eventbrite.
October 1 has been set as the date for the Corryong Show in 2022, after it was cancelled this year and last due to COVID-19.
