Chiltern Railroaders and Modellers will hold open days this Saturday and Sunday, November 27 and 28, 10am to 3pm, following on from the group's inaugural event in May.

President Keith Grigsby said about 350 people came through the doors that weekend and since then nearly 400 more had visited their base in the town's Goods Shed.

"We're averaging on a good weekend, (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), between 35 and 40 people come through," he said.

The features include model railways, of course, along with artworks, dolls and bears, small engines and collections such as crock pots and biscuit tins.

As well as the three regular days each week, the shed is opened by appointment for group excursions.

Chiltern Railroaders and Modellers this week received a $500 grant from Chiltern Tourism and Development Inc.

"Which has basically ensured our longevity here for another 12 months," Mr Grigsby said.

"Our interest hasn't waned because we've be able to work on our hobby at home, as well as here, every opportunity we've had.

"We're all retired people and we need something to keep ourselves active and keep our mind and physical being well, so this is the way we chose to do it."

Chiltern Tourism and Development Inc community officer Karin Berrysmith commended the group's ongoing efforts at the Goods Shed, which was "a beautiful asset".

"To see it open and used and people going in and out, it's great," she said.

"We're half an hour from everywhere; half an hour from Albury-Wodonga, we're half an hour from Wangaratta.

"So whilst people are here they're actually looking at the town and thinking, 'Gee, this is a nice place, we'll have a wander around' and potentially come back."
