Four traffic light poles underneath the freeway overpass are being replaced by Victorian Department of Transport crews following a traffic accident.
It is causing delays on the Lincoln Causeway with traffic reduced to single lanes on the north- and south-bound lanes of the causeway.
The Department of Transport says these works will be complete before tomorrow, when Hume Freeway traffic will be diverted onto the Lincoln Causeway.
Dyson Group manager Brett Drinnan said today's roadworks impacting the Lincoln Causeway had come as a surprise and he had assumed it was related to the impending freeway closure.
"It's given us a bit of a snapshot of what's potentially going to occur, so without a doubt our services will find delays," he said.
"We will deal with it; we're seasoned operators following border closures and delays we were experiencing there with permit checks."
Mr Drinnan said staff would manage the upcoming freeway closure.
"We've got a phone app that we can push out some information on advising our customers to expect some delays, but that's about as much as we can do," he said.
"It's almost winding the clock back 15, 20 years when all the traffic did follow the causeway on the old Hume Highway route."
The Hume Freeway will be closed northbound near the NSW border between 9am and 3.30pm daily from Wednesday, December 8 to Friday, December 10.
During this time, essential lighting repairs and bridge inspections will take place from High Street/Lincoln Causeway to the New South Wales border each day.
Northbound motorists should exit the freeway at Lincoln Causeway and follow the signed detours through the Albury township, to return to the freeway from Atkins Street.
There will also be delays for south-bound traffic on the freeway; traffic will be reduced to one lane between the Spirit of Progress Bridge (Murray River) and High Street with a 60km/h speed limit.
