A long serving councillor and community figure from the Edward River Shire has died, just as he was entering retirement.

Edward River Council announced the death of its former mayor Councillor Norm Brennan on Tuesday afternoon.
In a statement, council said it was devastated by the death of a friend and champion of the region.
"He was known to the staff and councillors of Edward River and Conargo Councils as a kind and decent man," the statement said.
"We extend our sympathies to his wife Linda, his children, and grandchildren and all those who loved him.

"We are saddened he was just starting to enjoy his retirement after so many years of dedicated public service at the time of his passing.
"An enormous figure, Norm will be sadly missed and never forgotten."
Mr Brennan served Edward River for four years as mayor and prior to that, as a councillor of Conargo Shire Council for 21 years, 12 of those as mayor.
Mr Brennan was added to the Emeritus Mayor Honour Roll in 2008 and was awarded the Outstanding Service Award in 2015.
At the end of his council term last year Mr Brennan retired.
