The Wodonga hoop only returned to the saddle last month after more than three months on the sidelines as he battled to keep his weight under control.
Souquet didn't take long to recapture his winning form with Broadside Armour only his seventh ride since returning.
He had been knocking on the door of a win with four minor placings before yesterday.
Broadside Armour is only a recent addition to the Maher stable after almost 12 months on the sidelines with a tendon injury.
The son of Helmet was formerly trained by John O'Shea where Maher's daughter, Alex, is an employee of the stable.
Broadside Armour finished near the tail of the field when having his first start for Maher last month at Wangaratta.
But the five-year-old gelding relished the heavy (10) track at Wagga to score an upset win at big odds of 23/1.

Souquet said it felt good to be back in the saddle after the extended break.
"I think that was only my sixth ride since I've been back," Souquet said.
"So it's good to be back in the winners stall so quickly, especially on one of Pete's horses.
"His run at Wangaratta was better than it looked.
"I worked him the other morning and his work was quite sharp so we expected an improved performance.
"Pete should have a bit of fun with this horse."
