A BILLY cart broke legal the speed limit at Yackandandah yesterday during an annual race that is getting more high-tech every year.
Leading Sen-Constable Luke Millar was on hand with his radar gun to clock one participant flashing past at 51km/h, just above the residential road’s speed limit.
However there were no charges laid, apparently the young “hoon” got away with just a light-hearted warning.
Yackandandah Primary School principal Kathy McAuliffe said the family fun day, now in its ninth year, was becoming bigger, faster and more popular than ever.
This year the average speed of the billy carts was 43km/h.
About 80 drivers had their turn on 22 home-made vehicles.
Ms McAuliffe said as well as rounding up the town for a fun day, the town’s billy cart race encouraged families to spend more time together in the lead-up.
Parents, and fathers in particular, were heavily involved in building the of flashy four-wheeled carts.
