Police appeal for help in boat tragedy

Police are appealing for information after reports a boat and its occupants may have sunk in Wollongong Harbour on Sunday night.

Just after 6pm on Sunday, police received a triple zero call, relaying the reports of a woman and a number of others who said they saw a small boat in the harbour that appeared to be sinking, with two people in the water.

With volunteers from local surf life saving clubs, two helicopters, and marine rescue personnel, police searched the harbour until about 9.30pm.

They searched about 500 to 600 metres off the lighthouse, while officers on land searched the foreshore and nearby boat ramps.

Police from the Wollongong Local Area Command have commenced an investigation into the report and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward. In particular, they are seeking the woman who made the initial report of the sinking boat.

The search will continue Monday morning.
