Adam Probert died after suffering a stab wound to the chest at his East Albury unit early yesterday morning.
Mr Probert, 47, was single with no dependents.
He was raised in the Mulwala-Yarrawonga area but had lived in Albury for several years.
Police said a post mortem examination would determine Mr Probert's official cause of death.
They initially thought the injury was self-inflicted but investigations revealed suspicious circumstances.
Police and paramedics were called to the unit on Alexandra Street about 1.20am yesterday with reports a man had been injured.
The unit door was open and they found Mr Probert on the floor.
He was taken to Albury Base Hospital where staff attempted to resuscitate him but he died a short time later.
An Albury Wodonga Health spokeswoman said Mr Probert had suffered a stab wound.
The unit was sealed off yesterday.
Police fingerprinted the outside of the unit and seized a number of items for forensic examination.
“As with all sudden and unexplained deaths police do have to investigate and that includes a thorough examination of any location where the body is found,” a police spokeswoman said.
“Our inquiries are continuing.”
Police would not say if a weapon was found.
Earlier in the day detectives door knocked homes in Alexandra Street as well as surrounding streets.
One resident said she was asked if she had heard fighting, which she said she hadn’t.

“The first I noticed the police was when I got home from work at about 1pm.
“It’s usually very quiet here, you don’t expect anything like this to happen.”
