The morgue was built by mining magnate Captain Shadrack Gollings, owner of the Victoria Hotel, because he didn't want the inconvenience of corpses cluttering his cool cellar, as was the custom in those days.
It remained in service until the mid-1920s, and these days is used as a bike storage shed.
The hotel which dates back to 1867, was one of 24 watering holes in the town in the gold rush days.
It also has fireplaces and an ancient well complete with heavy, hand-operated pump.
There are also 36 cells at the rear of the hotel which were used for the bachelor guests.
