Belinda Chambers from the Rutherglen Rowing Club said the club began in 1859 and is the second-oldest rowing club in the country.
It also co-hosts the oldest continuously run regatta in the country.
It has just staged the 147th regatta at Lake Moodemere which attracted a record field of 650 competitors.
"Just a few years ago the club had no active rowers and there was talk of disbanding but it's enjoyed renewed interest and support."
Mrs Chambers said the club was attracting younger members who soon discovered the joy of rowing.
"There's nothing like being out on the water on a beautiful day and enjoying the serenity of it," she said.
"Lake Moodemere is perfect for rowing, there's lots of protection and it is very smooth."
Son Joel is taking after his mother and father, Mick Chambers, also a keen rower.
He recently won the under-19 Victorian Championships in the single scull.
Club training is on Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm to 8pm and on Saturday from 8am.
