THE number of salmonella cases linked to The Burger Bar in Albury continues to rise.

Yesterday, health authorities said a total of 111 people had experienced gastro-like illness after eating at the Dean Street restaurant this month.
Almost 20 of those have been confirmed as salmonellosis, up from seven last Friday, with the number expected to rise.
Tests have also confirmed aioli, a garlic mayonnaise that includes raw egg, as the source of the outbreak.
Acting director of Albury’s public health unit, Alison Nikitas, said cases continued to grow as news of the illness spread.
“It’s not due to ongoing transmission, but people calling us during the week as they become aware of it,” she said.
Mrs Nikitas said the people experiencing symptoms of salmonella had eaten at The Burger Bar since January 10.
Most of the cases were from Thursday, January 14 to Monday, January 18.
The Burger Bar closed voluntarily last Friday, with a prohibition order issued by the NSW Food Authority later in the day.
The NSW Food Authority yesterday revealed the home-made aioli had tested positive to salmonella.
Owner Adrian Whitehead said the authority was now conducting cross-contamination tests.
“We’re still co-operating with NSW health authorities and hope to may be open toward the end of the week,” he said.
While there were concerns the outbreak was not made public until last Thursday, The Burger Bar’s restaurant’s Facebook page has been flooded with community support.
Most people were sympathetic and have vowed to eat there again.
“I have worked in the food industry for many years and no matter how clean your shop and kitchen are, and no matter how careful you are, sometimes there may (be) something slip through the safety net,” one person said.
Another comment described the restaurant as “one of the best eateries” in Albury.
