The match was unable to go ahead because bad weather prevented planes carrying Essendon players from landing at Wangaratta.
After more than an hour of speculation and misinformation, the AFL confirmed the match would be abandoned about 6pm.
The match has been deemed a draw, ruining both teams' NAB Cup chances.
St Kilda players arrived at Wangaratta by bus yesterday evening.
Hundreds of fans had already arrived at the Wangaratta Showgrounds when the decision was made.
Even then it took several minutes for the news to spread.
Brad Reese, who made the trip from Seymour for the match, was disgusted with Essendon.
"They were big noting themselves saying we're using a plane," he said.
"We made it here, now there's 10,000 people turned away from the football.
"It's not on.
"They've treated it like a joke.
"How often do you hear of AFL teams not turning up to the footy.
"Never. I'm going home wet and disappointed."
Shortly before 4.30pm, player Kyle Hardingham tweeted that the team had not made it to Wangaratta.
