New doctors as centre opens

16 Jun, 2011 01:24 PM
A NEW bulk-billing medical practice for Wodonga will open next month with four doctors practising.

Mildura-based Tristar Medical Group will occupy a large purpose-built clinic on the site of the old Terminus Hotel at 79 High Street, opening its doors on July 18.

Project co-ordinator Cam Matthies said yesterday the first four doctors would relocate to Wodonga from other Tristar clinics with that figure to rise to eight or 10.

“We will also have a radiology clinic, a pathology service and cafe on the street frontage,’’ Mr Matthies said.

“Tristar’s philosophy is to provide high quality care at an affordable price.’’

Bulk-billing would be available for GP clients unless there were reasons such as a work medical certificate being billed to an employer.

An investors’ consortium bought the vacant site from Gateway Community Health last year for almost $1 million and the single-storey building has been under construction since January.

The clinic will operate seven days a week.

Tristar has 27 clinics mostly in Victoria, including Mildura, Bendigo, Geelong, Shepparton, Swan Hill, Wentworth and in Melbourne.

“Wodonga will be our 29th clinic as the 28th will be opened at Ballarat before Wodonga,’’ Mr Matthies said.

Tristar advertised this week for five medical receptionists in permanent part-time roles, with a guaranteed minimum of 30 hours per fortnight.

Successful applicants will be expected to work rotational shifts across seven days a week.

The Terminus Hotel burnt down in 1998 and the site was sold to an agency since renamed Gateway Community Health.

Gateway subsequently opted to move into the former Fosseys-Mate’s building at 155 High Street, which the Victorian Department of Human Services had bought for $5.4 million in 2008.
