Bahati Masudi and his family accommodated two women and a man earlier this year as part of the television show Go Back to Where You Came From which has screened on SBS over the past three nights.
He said yesterday he did not know until watching the show on Tuesday night that one of the participants, Raquel Moore, told the documentary-makers she was a racist and did not like African people.
“I was shocked,” Mr Masudi said.
Ms Moore, South Australian retiree Raye Colby and Queensland Young Liberal Roderick Schneider spent several nights with Mr Masudi, his wife Maisara and their children earlier this year.
Before entering the refugees’ home Ms Moore, who lives in the western suburbs of Sydney, appeared on camera saying she did not like Africans and felt uncomfortable about black-skinned people.
Mr Masudi said he did not like Ms Moore’s comments but did not believe her opinions reflected the views of most Australians.
However, by the final episode of the show Ms Moore had changed her views and said she did not bigoted towards Africans.
A university student, Mr Masudi said overall feedback to his involvement in the show, which included him describing political torture in Burundi, had been positive.
“It’s very good and more people have started saying they can’t believe it,” Mr Masudi said.
Go Back to Where You Came From concluded last night with the three Australians who visited the Masudi family, travelling through Africa and meeting Mr Masudi’s brother.
