Police were called to Afonso’s Castleton Street home about 4.30am on Tuesday, June 15 after at least one shot was fired into the property’s driveway.

Afonso’s car was damaged and a window at the front of the house was also hit, probably by a ricochet.

Neither of the two occupants were woken by the shooting and the weapon used is suspected to be a low-powered device.

One day after the shooting ,Wod-onga County Court heard that David and brother Pedro Afonso had withdrawn appeals against sentences they had received in April for their involvement in a brawl.

David Afonso denied the shooting had any role in the appeal withdrawal.

“We wrote letters to our solicitor David Avery withdrawing our appeals several days before the incident, so it could not and did not have an effect on our decision,” he said.

Detective Sen-Constable Murray Sleep, of Wodonga police, yesterday said there was no evidence suggesting the Castleton Street incident and court action were related.

Afonso said he had no suspects in the shooting and could not rule out the attack being random.

“We’re not particularly concerned about our safety,” he said.

Afonso has offered a $1000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

“We are disappointed that dangerous acts of vandalism are happening in our community and are calling those responsible to hand themselves in,” David Afonso said.

“People like this should not be roaming the streets, but put away.”
