Teen race hate gang

29 Oct, 2008 02:13 PM
ALBURY’S indigenous community has been sickened to hear of a racist teenage gang threatening violence against the city’s Aborigines.

The group — one side of a bloody dispute with a group of mostly Koori youths — has been accused of operating under the initials KAC.

The Border Mail deems the name of the gang too offensive to print.

Sources close to the conflict told The Border Mail of the group’s existence in the wake of last Thursday’s brawls.

But a relative of the teenagers accused of starting the gang yesterday insisted there was no such thing as KAC.

Meanwhile, Wiradjuri elder Nancy Rooke, who was first told of the group a month ago, said it was one of the worst examples of racism in Albury she had heard of in the past 30 years.

Mrs Rooke said the city’s Aboriginal leaders were especially concerned by the violent confrontations in central and West Albury last week.

“We just can’t believe it’s gotten so out of hand,” she said.

“It’s very scary for both sides.

“I don’t know where it’s all coming from.

“It’s a big concern, and if it’s not nipped in the bud, I think we’re going to see a lot more violence.”

Mrs Rooke also called on the Aboriginal teens to rise above the temptation to fight.

“Wake up to yourselves — stand up and walk away from this thing,” she said.

“It will get nobody anywhere.”

Mrs Rooke said anyone using race to fuel violence should take stock of their actions.

“We can’t believe that these young people are saying such rot,” she said.

“Prick your finger and we’ll see what colour blood you have. Don’t we all bleed the same?”

Mrs Rooke called on everyone involved — on both sides of the dispute — to cool their heads.

“This is Wiradjuri land,” she said.

“How dare these people make a mess of it?

“We’ve got to live in this world, we’ve all got to get on.”

2 girls, sitting in dean street attacked by four people. very civilised indeed. i happen to know that the white people you are referring to have grown up with koori, kiwi, and thai friends. they are NOT RACIST.. But, it seems to me, as i read your comments that the racism issue is being brought into it by you.. The 2 girls minding their own business did bleed alright. It is NOT racially motivated at all and there is no such "gang" --nice to read untruths by you. i could say plenty. i am not a racist either, my 2 grandchildren have a koori grandmother.. colour does not enter my head and never has.. good and bad doesn`t choose colour.. people who choose to behave in this manner are a disgrace.

Good on Mrs Rooke!! I live in West Albury and was close enough to see some of the brawl last week, my concern is..WHERE ARE THE POLICE?? and where is the help to stop this happening in the first place?? I have lived in West Albury by myself, a single female in her 20's for 4 years now, and slowly i've seen the police decrease their presence to now non existence. I was once told by local police i was silly for living where i was and should just move! How about some support from the police? Show us West Albury people you care? Show the young kids some guidance! Yes its a disgrace to see it happen in our main street, but you care to forget its happening all the time in West Albury now. I called the police a week before about a brawl in our street that had around 20 people in it...took half an hr for them to respond, with only one car showing up with their lights on high beam drove past a few times to scare them, and that was all they did! Its about time we felt safe in every corner of Albury!! Local police please take some notice!

kk. they don`t want to know, isn`t that obvious... i know about the terror threats you have had in the past. dean street is public and the mayor gets involved, a big polital stunt with a lot of fobbing off and words which are not the full facts written in the newspaper.. i am so very glad that i live in wodonga.. the koori group is called the ''kak'' and ''kag" -didn`t read that in the border mail either did we.

I think its DISGUSTING that a bunch of teens have this group. I have lived in Albury/Wodonga for 21 years and NEVER have i felt unsafe, but since hearing of this group I am to scared to walk any where along @ night. Where the hell are the police? Where is our local governement? In order for peoepl to feel safe in Albury Wodonga the police need to be every where. I just cant believe this lovely area has now turned into a hate community, we might as well just start war amongst each other. When will someone do something about this problem, instead of ignoring the issue?
