The only councillor to oppose the name change at last week’s community and cultural committee, Cr Daryl Betteridge, was part of the unanimous vote passed.
Jackson will join other home-grown sporting icons in tennis player Margaret Court and footballer Haydn Bunton in having facilities named in their honour in Albury.
Cr Amanda Duncan-Strelec, who instigated the move, was delighted the change would go ahead at a cost of $60,000 to ratepayers and could be completed later this year.
“I deliberately didn’t turn up to the committee meeting even though I am not a member and wasn’t required to attend,” she said.
“I wanted the debate without my influence there given I was the one who raised the issue.
“It pleased me greatly to see it go through smooth passage tonight.
“The council agreed unanimously and it shouldn’t have degenerated to some of the comments made by opponents.
“It is extremely appropriate it be called the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre, particularly given her love of Albury and her parochialism towards Albury and the fact she is hoping one day to come back here and raise a family.
“She is a wonderful role model for the young in our community.”
