The dog, either a staghound or wolfhound cross, was weighed by Granya farmer Ken Star.
It weighed 80kg and Mr Star has described it as “a thumping big thing”.
Mr Star said he had spoken to local dogman Morrie Moore, who said he has never heard of such a large dog.
And a member of the North East Wild Dog Management Group, Noel Cheshire, was also surprised.
Mr Cheshire, from Burrowye, said the biggest wild dog he had heard of was 75kg and caught in the Brindabella area of NSW.
“That dog had footprints as big as the palm of your hand,” Mr Cheshire said.
But the larger dog was at the Chapman property, about 1km on the Albury side of the Wymah ferry, last week.
It was barking at a horse in a paddock close to the house.
Glenda Chapman said that it looked about as high as the fence and was “huge”.
“It was double the size of a labrador,” she said.
“No adult could fight a dog like that.”
Her husband went out in an attempt to get the dog, but it ran off and the Chapmans alerted neighbours the dog was in the area.
It was shot the following day on nearby mud flats on the Murray River.
Mrs Chapman and her husband have been living at their property for more than five years without having wild dog problems.
“That’s the first one we have had here,” she said.
In recent weeks, farms have continued to suffer attacks.
Mr Star has shot two dogs in the past fortnight on his property.
Tallangatta farmer Steve Bowran has shot seven dogs in the past week as they continue to attack sheep and lambs.
The Bowran family has lost almost 600 sheep and lambs on their Yabba Rd property since the start of the year.
