About 50 people turned out to watch the heritage-listed building go under the hammer on Saturday, with bidding starting at $150,000.
Five people put their hands up for the property, one of which was believed to be a local supermarket representative, but a former Rutherglen High School student had the winning bid.
Cheryl Dowse, of Melbourne, lived at Rutherglen as a teenager and has fond memories of spending time in the town.
When she saw the station on the corner of Main and High streets was for sale she couldn’t resist.
“I used to spend a lot of time here at Rutherglen during my school holidays and I saw this and thought, ‘why not?” she said.
“This is a wine area and I would like to have this as a place for people to come and have tastings from all the growers in the region.
“It saves you driving all around, they can come up and have a little tipple and then go to that winery if they find something they like.”
