More than 2700 entries have been received for the 146th edition of the Murray Rowing Association’s annual regatta, with last year’s record number of entries smashed by 20 per cent in the space of just 12 months.
Rowing Victoria chief executive Nick Gall said the regatta, run by Corowa, Wahgunyah and Rutherglen clubs, was fast becoming one of the biggest of its kind in Australia.
“This regatta has now achieved a cult status with all of the rowing clubs in Melbourne, Geelong and throughout the state,” Gall said.
“As crews plan their season they are now pencilling in this regatta as their must attend regatta.
“They love the friendly atmosphere, the great racing and being able to experience the wonderful region that is the North East.”
An unprecedented 520 rowers descended on Lake Moodemere last year, however, more than 650 look set to battle it out this time around.
Competition is expected to be strong, particularly in the Masters events, with clubs from metropolitan and country Victoria, NSW, Adelaide and the ACT all entering the event.
Murray Rowing Association president Paul Somerville said there will be plenty of reasons for locals to come and watch.
“Entry to the event is free and it’s a great opportunity to witness one of the region’s largest sporting events and to watch some entertaining racing,” Somerville said.
