Sent in to bat, CAW Bailey’s top and middle order diligently compiled a respectable 5-141 from its 45 overs, with Jack Craig leading the way with an impressive half-century.
City Colts youngster Jesse Smith was the pick of Wangaratta’s bowlers with 2-6 from four overs.
In reply, several Wangaratta batsmen got starts but struggled to break the shackles against tight and disciplined bowling.
Isaac Willett (29) and Callum Nankervis (20) top-scored before it was left to the Wangaratta tail in the dying overs.
With just a handful of runs to chase but only one wicket remaining, both sides started to crack under pressure.
It came to a head in the 41st over when the Wangaratta batsmen gave the Border side two chances to claim victory but both catches were dropped.
But CAW Bailey made amends in the next over, taking the final wicket with the score at 140.
It was Wangaratta’s first loss and CAW Bailey’s first victory, setting up a crucial derby with CAW Wright today.
Yesterday’s other game also went down to the wire, with Ben-alla edging past CAW Wright’s score of 122 with one wicket in hand.
In division 2, WDCA Ovens (173) claimed bragging rights against WDCA Murray (121) while Benalla (7-136) had an easy win against CAW (95).
Meanwhile, in the under-17 division 1 competition, WDCA enjoyed a commanding win against CAW Lee at Norm Minns Oval.
The home team, led by Declan Stewart’s 49, managed to post 7-204 before a disciplined bowling and fielding effort restricted the Border outfit to 8-141.
Benalla ensured CAW went winless in yesterday’s under-17 matches, beating CAW Ponting by 57 runs at Benalla.
In division 2, Rutherglen batsman Matt King fell an agonising run short of a deserved century as WDCA Border (8-246) crushed Benalla (66) at Benalla.
WDCA Valley (8-228) also had a comfortable win, accounting for CAW (147) at Whorouly.
