CAW, still reeling from its SCG Country Cup exit at the hands of the Murray Valley association the previous week, proved a class above Leeton in the Twenty20 clash at Mark Taylor Oval.
The win was set up by a brilliant bowling and fielding display, with Rhys Jones taking 4-16 from four overs and Greg Daniel 2-7 off two overs as they helped bowl Leeton out for just 93.
CAW was never really troubled in the run chase, with Liam Scammell continuing his fine representative season with an unbeaten 32-run knock, while Robbie Jackson smashed 30 as the visitors finished 4-95 in 17 overs.
CAW chairman of selectors Grant Ball said it was an important win for the association.
“It was a good wicket on a big ground,” Ball said last night.
“It was a much better effort than last week’s game (against Murray Valley). We’ve got another three games in our pool and we’ve got to finish top two in the pool to go through.
“We were a bit better in the batting; we batted right down.
“Our fielding was better than theirs.”
Meanwhile, a sparkling half-century from Tallangatta captain Andrew Lade proved too much for Benalla in yesterday’s North East Cricket Region 6 Twenty20 final at the Norm Minns Oval in Wangaratta.
Lade hammered seven boundaries and one six in his knock as the Bushrangers made 7-124 and bundled their opponents for just 48.
Benalla never looked in the match after slumping to 5-28 off 10 overs.
Earlier in the day, Benalla defeated Corowa and Tallangatta proved too strong for Bruck.
Tallangatta will play the winner of Region 5 in the next round of the competition.
