In one of the worst kept secrets in Ovens and Murray football, Mooney was announced as Peter Tossol’s successor at the Roos’ presentation night on Friday.
The midfielder was best afield in Bairnsdale’s 60-point victory against Lindenow in the East Gippsland Football League grand final on Saturday and will arrive at John Foord Oval later this year.
He also led the Redlegs to glory in 2009.
Mooney, 24, takes on one of the toughest jobs in the O and M with the Roos managing just two wins against Myrtleford this year and facing the prospect of losing several of their Melbourne travellers.
He won the East Gippsland best and fairest award as a 19-year-old in 2005 before spending a year with Ainslie in the AFL Canberra competition in 2007.
From there he joined Tasmania’s VFL team in 2008 before returning to coach Bairnsdale in 2009.
Tossol, who guided Corowa-Rutherglen to flags in 2002 and 2003, and is the Roos’ Team of the Century coach, stepped down from the helm after eight seasons in charge.
Meanwhile, star midfielder David Clark romped to the Roos best and fairest on Friday night ahead of runners-up Lachie Longmire and Tyler Bonat.
Cade Mills was next followed by Kade Kuschert.
Veteran Tom Nixon took out the Roos’ reserve grade best and fairest award after shelving plans to retire over the off-season.
