The Saints have a younger and much more locally based side this year under David Peiper than the one that played finals last year.
And the morale around the place was encouraging after a 36-point victory over Marrar last week, and Peiper hoped it would hold them in good stead for a crack at a powerful Magpies combination which remains undefeated.
“It’s a very young side there this year and a lot different looking to last year,” he said.
“We had a few blokes travel up from Melbourne last year but this year it’s a lot more locally based which is better for training I think.
“We have a lot of young guys who are fit and keen.
“It’s good to have a local side and everyone seems to be enjoying it and to win a couple of games early on as well is good for the morale.”
Peiper said his side was confident of an inspired effort against the competition pace-setter despite going into the match without Steve Barnes and Adrian Dowdell.
Barnes could be sidelined for up to a month with a broken hand while Dowdell strained his hamstring in the win over Marrar.
“We’re looking to take it right up to them and everyone is keen to knock off the top side,” Peiper said.
“We were not full strength last week either but blokes just lifted and gave it their all and we got the result.
“We need another effort like that this weekend and a little bit more.”
Reigning premier Northern Jets take on Rivcoll this week, who are fresh from a bye.
The Jets won a cliff-hanger by two points last week against Temora and will be looking for a more convincing result against the Bushpigs.
Temora travels to Marrar and will start a warm favourite to take the points.
