The conduct of telephone betting enables licensed bookmakers fielding at a racecourse to accept bets via the telephone from punters off-course.
Albury-based Maclean is only the second Border bookmaker to offer the service and was encouraged by the response and gradual increase in his clientele.
“I have only just started offering telephone betting for the past three months but the interest has been promising and I have now got about 37 clients who regularly use the service,” he said.
“In that three-month period I have increased my turnover by just over 20 per cent which is enormous in terms to my business.
“The main reason I am offering this service is to give clients more flexibility and therefore increase my turnover.”
The service caters for punters of all sizes ranging from the $20 punter or to bigger clients who like to bet in the thousands.
“The Melbourne Cup was huge. Some of the bigger bets I held were a phone client who had $2000 each-way on Viewed at $6 in the Cup,” Maclean said.
“Then on Cox Plate day another phone client had $2000 each-way on the Kym Davison-trained Loughran Lad at $6, which finished unplaced.
“One of the bigger collects was at Albury on Cox Plate day when a client had $1000 on the Kym Davison-trained Avia Alize which won at $6.
“Another punter had $500 on Rangirangdoo at $4.20 all-up and Apache Cat at $3.60, both won and it was a $7000 payout.”
Maclean hopes to expand the business even further to incorporate sports betting in coming months.
“During winter I hope to be able to also offer a service where clients can bet on the AFL, rugby league, tennis or any other sport,” he said.
