Melbourne club wins in three-way countback

16 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
MELBOURNE Rowing Club has won a thrilling 146th edition of the Lake Moodemere regatta.

Locked on 22 wins with Geelong’s Barwon Rowing Club and defending champions Essendon at the end of proceedings, perennial powerhouse Melbourne won on countback thanks largely to strong performances in the masters and female sections.

The event, Australia’s oldest rowing regatta, attracted a record field of 650 competitors this year, with 2700 entries received.

Corowa Rowing Club was the best performed local outfit at the weekend, securing four wins and earning a top-10 finish overall.

A luckless Rutherglen was next best with one win, with a handful of near misses at the finish line.

Nagambie duo Tim and Will Day were the standout performers at the regatta, winning the A-Grade pairs and double scull events on both days of competition.

Murray Rowing Association president Paul Somerville said the record-breaking event was undoubtedly the best yet.

“It was an excellent regatta,” Somerville said.

“The feedback has been sensational.

“The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed themselves.”
