More than 400 competitors and 1000 spectators descended on the banks of Lake Moodemere for the Rutherglen Sprints Regatta, the oldest and fastest-growing regatta in Australia.
A total of 680 races starting at three-minute intervals were completed yesterday and Saturday with Corowa Rowing Club upstaging strong local and metropolitan competition to win the Redgum shield for most successful club.
Corowa won with 12 wins ahead of Melbourne Rowing Club (8) and Yarra Yarra (6).
Among the competitors were 1956 Olympic bronze medallists Neville Howell and Adrian Monger, now in their 70s, and victorious in the masters event.
Former deputy Victorian premier Pat McNamara also enjoyed a victory with son, Michael.
“It was an excellent regatta,” Rutherglen Rowing Club president Paul Somerville said.
“Rowing Victoria officials said it’s the best regatta in Victoria.
“It’s been estimated that the event pumps more than $200,000 into the local community so the more it grows the better.”
