THE lure of a $5000 cheque was at the heart of a scam aimed at an Albury grandmother yesterday.
The woman, who declined to be named, was at home about 11am when she got a call from an Asian-sounding woman.
She was told she had been overcharged on direct debit transactions with her bank and that she was owed $5000 by the federal government.
She was told she would have to wait for the cheque but she needed to pay $100 to cover the costs of it being sent out.
The grandmother contacted The Border Mail to alert others to the scam.
