Miss Zamperoni, 19, said she was thrilled to have turned the $40 dress she found on fashion website Boohoo more than a year ago into the $1000 cash prize of the competition associated with the Albury Gold Cup Carnival.
“I had been saving the dress for the occasion,” she said.
“I had never been to the Gold Cup before, but I knew everyone got really dressed up.”
Miss Zamperoni had read that floral prints were in vogue and felt good about her choice.
She added matching floral high heels she had in her wardrobe.
The Charles Sturt University student saved money by reinventing an old fascinator.
She said the windfall would pay for another week overseas with boyfriend, Riley Ivone, who also scored a cash prize — the $250 random draw for those who registered votes.
Miss Zamperoni said her family and university friends were a big part of her fan base.
“I have a big Italian family, so I think that helped,” she said.
